The Passion for Running with DeWitt
e
Runners will tell you that running doesn’t only improve your physical and mental health, but your overall mood as well. This week we sat with our very own DeWitt and talked about the running lifestyle. He provided some tips and knowledge based on his experience. DeWitt has participated in 12 marathons, 2 Half Ironman races, and countless shorter triathlons, 5k’s,10k’s, and half marathons.
DeWitt started running after college. “Post-college out of shapbody,” he stated. He and Jeff both started running during the mid-’90s when DeWitt lived in Charleston. “The Cooper River Bridge Run was the first run that we entered. That’s really when I started running.”
DeWitt stated that he stays motivated by finding a new place to run each week. He said that running is his favorite way to explore new places. “My favorite part of running is when you’re in a marathon and you are getting ready to come across the finish line. I always remind myself to soak it in despite the pain I may be feeling. This is the culmination of all the hard work put in over the last few months. It’s the biggest high in the world,” DeWitt said.
Suggestion for new runners:
“The hardest part is getting started, so start with a goal. Even if it’s just walking a mile or so,” DeWitt said. “Start slow and build up. If you are breathing too hard, back it down. It may take a while, but if you stick with it you will get over the hump, and eventually, you will find your pace where you can love it.”
He also suggested hydrating properly before and during the run, and for longer runs, definitely consume plenty of calories during the run. He revealed that this not only increases success during the run but greatly improves recovery.
Running Must Haves:
“Jeff and I were running for many years before starting B&B. As is the case for all of the products in the store, we don’t pitch them because we sell them – we sell them because we have used them and love them!”
Garmin Forerunner 245 – “It tracks every detail! I have an Apple Watch and it’s great for smartwatch functions. But when it comes to running I choose Garmin. It also syncs with Nike Run Club,” DeWitt said.

Body Glide – “I have been using Body Glide for years! It’s great for any run, but a must for long runs (over 10ks),” DeWitt said.

Honey Stinger – “The waffles are great! I also take the gels with me,” DeWitt said.

Fits – “I didn’t know what I was missing prior to using Fits Socks. They have made a huge difference. They stay locked in place, are odor-free and moisture-wicking,” DeWitt said.
